Shadowgrass at hidden hall
I had the opportunity to shoot the band Shadowgrass at Hidden Halls, and it was my first real concert photography experience. Walking in, I was nervous, what if I didn’t shoot it well enough? What if the lighting wasn’t what I expected? But one thing about me is that I figure things out as I go.
The moment I entered Hidden Halls, I was greeted by low, moody lighting and a beautiful ambiance. The venue itself is stunningly designed. There’s a large open space with a bar on the right side, and upstairs, framed photos from past concerts line the walls. The upstairs also has a cozy viewing room with a fireplace and chairs, complete with a video feed of the stage. A perfect spot to relax while still catching the performance.
My favorite feature, though, has to be the semi circular balcony that overlooks the stage, bar, and standing area below. Ticket holders could sit up there, enjoy a drink, and take in a unique perspective of the show. It was an incredibly cool view.
The show itself was an absolute blast. Shadowgrass used minimal lighting, which worked perfectly for the intimate vibe of the concert, drawing all attention to the band. They made full use of the stage, ensuring everyone in the crowd had a great view. Fans were dancing, singing, and even bantering with the band between sets.
After the concert, the band signed a few setlists and chatted with fans, which I thought was really special both the band and the venue clearly value that connection with their audience.
Overall, it was an amazing first experience. I learned a lot on the fly, and I’m thrilled with how the photos turned out. There’s nothing like figuring it out in real time and coming away with results you’re proud of.
